Background History: Lions
Clubs International serves people throughout the world. Globally, Lions clubs
are known for their commitment to blindness prevention. Second only to the
Lions' devotion to aiding the blind and visually impaired is a dedication to
serving young people. Through membership in a Lions club, people not only
help those in need, but have opportunities to develop personal friendships and
gain valuable leadership skills.
What are the official requirements for
membership?
Membership is open to men and women of legal majority and good reputation in the
community, and is by invitation only. Clubs meet at least twice a month and
elect officers annually. The association is governed by an international board
of directors. Each year, more than 20,000 Lions attend their international
convention to discuss new ideas, share experiences and reaffirm friendship and
fellowship. Those interested in membership should contact the local Lions
club.

What is the emblem of Lions Clubs International?
The current Lions emblem was adopted at the 1919 convention. The
emblem consists of a gold letter "L" on a circular purple field.
Bordering this is a circular gold area with two lion profiles facing away from
the center. The word "Lion" and "International" appear at
the top and bottom. The Lions are meant to face both a proud past and confident
future.
